King George Island, Antarctica Antarctica

Named after King George III, this is the first site of land after crossing the Drake Passage, approximately 120 km north of Antarctica. The island is home to research stations for numerous countries and hosts an annual marathon. The Russian Orthodox Trinity church is located here and is one of the few permanent structures in Antarctica.
